It is not as though there are many people left in the world harbouring the misconception that cigarettes are good for you. The negative connotations for your health are well stated and well known but it may be the case that many people don’t understand the wider implications that smoking can have for your health. There is obviously a natural focus on the cancer risks that come with smoking but there are many different risks and concerns that smokers should have. There are medical findings that suggest that smoking places a person at risk of in excess of 50 dangerous health conditions. With many of these being fatal and many others causing a lot of serious long-term health problems, people need to be fully aware of the risks that come with smoking.
The link between smoking and cancer should be well known and smoking is responsible for causing around 90% of lung cancer. This is the most common place where smokers will have cancer but there are many other parts of the body at risk too. Smokers should be aware that they run the risk of mouth cancer, cancer of the lips, throat cancer, cancer of the larynx, oesophagus cancer, cancer of the bladder, cancer of the kidney, liver cancer, stomach cancer and pancreas cancer.
In addition to the cancer risks, smoking will also have a negative impact on your blood and heart. This means that smokers are likely to be at more risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, damaged blood vessels, bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia. If you smoke regularly, it is also more likely that you will be risk of conditions like asthma and you may find that you suffer the common cold a lot more regularly than people that do not smoke.
Men have other reasons to be put off smoking because it can cause impotence in men. This is due to the fact that smoking is known to limit the blood flow around the body and this will have a negative impact on the level of blood that flows to the penis. Men and women should also be aware that smoking can cause problems with fertility. Any couple that is keen to have a baby should be looking to cut back or give up smoking. When pregnant, it is recommended that a woman does not smoke at all and it would be unwise to expose her to second hand (passive) smoke either. Even a small amount of smoke can impact on the health of the child.
Findings indicate that smoking when pregnant will increase the likelihood of suffering a miscarriage, suffering a premature birth, the baby being born with a low birth rate or the baby being born stillborn.
The fact that smoking can have such a devastating impact on so many different parts of the body should provide the motivation to give up smoking.
